2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Ime Udoka, Ian Mahinmi, Marcus Williams
Losses: Melvin Ely, Jackie Butler, James White
Unsigned: Tiago Splitter, Giorgos Printezis
Projection: This is a team that understands what winning is all about. From the owner Peter Holt, all the way down to the players on the inactive list this franchise is built with one goal, winning basketball games. Unlike many of the other "Superstars" in the NBA Tim Duncan's name rarely makes the newspapers for anything other than his game time accomplishments. Many classify the Spurs as boring, but in this generation of flash and highlight clips that is to be expected. The Spurs treat basketball as a profession and four NBA Championship Titles in the last decade speaks for itself. San Antonio should be considered among the favorites to win the NBA Championship again this year. The Spurs return to play this season with their starting line up in tact and only a few minor personnel changes to their reserves. Although San Antonio will not finish the regular season with the best record, expect the Spurs to be the team to beat once the post-season begins. Gregg Popovich understands that the NBA season is a long and grueling marathon, so making sure his star players are fresh for the stretch run is his top priority. Mix in the trio of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili and you have the recipe for continued success. Although we don’t believe the Spurs will repeat as NBA Champions, we do expect them to once again advance to the Western Conference Finals.
Salary Cap Info:
Bargain Contract: Gregg Popovich
Inflated Contract: Manu Ginobili
Salary Cap Liquidity: Moderate
Salary Cap Notes: Ducan, Parker and Ginobili are signed through the 2009-10 season.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Grant Hill, Alando Tucker, DJ Strawberry
Losses: James Jones, Kurt Thomas, Jumaine Jones, Pat Burke
Unsigned: Jalen Rose (UFA)
Projection: Phoenix's salary dump of Kurt Thomas will hurt more in the post season than it will in the regular season, but we still feel this is the Suns year. Amare Stoudemire should be completely recovered from the microfracture knee surgery that threatened to derail his promising career. Steve Nash should once again be in the running for the league's Most Valuable Player award and Leandrinho Barbosa looks like he is ready to take his game to the next level. It will be interesting to see if head coach Mike D'Antoni goes to his bench more often this season in an attempt to keep his superstars fresh for the post-season. If he does, the Suns will need contributions from hold over Marcus Banks and newcomers Grant Hill, Brian Skinner, Alando Tucker and DJ Strawberry. Phoenix is poised to earn the top seed in the West and they should breeze through to the Western Conference Finals under this scenario. Unlike last year, we expect the Suns to handle the aging Spurs and advance to NBA Finals for the first time since the 1992-93 season, and in the process, win their first NBA Championship Title

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Eddie Jones, Brandon Bass, Nick Fazekas
Losses: Austin Croshere, Pops Mensah-Bonsu
Unsigned: Kevin Willis (UFA)
Projection: After last year's post-season disaster against the Golden State Warriors, the Dallas Mavericks have a lot to prove. Individually and as a team, the Mavericks need to show themselves and the rest of the league that they can elevate their performance when the stakes are high. However, the road to the NBA Finals in the Western Conference is tough and unfortunately for Dallas it still leads through San Antonio. Plus, the Southwest Division is absolutely loaded from top to bottom so the Mavericks will have to push all season long to stay ahead of the Spurs and Rockets in the standings. Ironic? Maybe, but it's true. Dirk needs to bounce back from his MVP 2006-07 season to become the leader of this team. It wasn't so much that he struggled but how he struggled that should raise eyebrows. The Warriors were able to defend him with a combination that involved Stephen Jackson (6'8"), holding Dirk to 38.3% shooting from the floor and five points per game below his regular season average. Although the Mavericks won't chase 70 wins, they will play better in the playoffs. However, we project them losing a tough seven game series to the San Antonio Spurs in the second round.
Salary Cap Info:
Bargain Contract: Josh Howard
Inflated Contract: Erick Dampier
Salary Cap Liquidity: Moderate
Salary Cap Notes: Mark Cuban signs the checks so don't worry Dallas fans.

Additions: Joe Smith, Joakim Noah, Aaron Gray, JamesOn Curry
Losses: Malik Allen
Unsigned: PJ Brown (UFA), Mike Sweetney (UFA), Martynas Andriuskevicius (RFA)
Projection: Chicago could very well end this season with the identical record that they posted last year, yet play better basketball. The Bulls will push the Pistons in the Central Division and should end the regular season with the second best record in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls have an impressive starting five: Kirk Hinrich, Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Tyrus Thomas and Ben Wallace. Plus, the free agent acquisition of Joe Smith, a healthy Andres Nocioni and the draft selection of Joakim Noah provides some much needed front court depth. Do not be surprised if the Eastern Conference reverts back to the late 1980's where the Bulls and Pistons meet year after year in the Conference Finals. The only question surrounding Chicago is whether or not they can get consistent offensive production from their interior players. Both Thomas and Wallace are more proficient on the defensive end of the court so the development of Joakim Noah will be a key. Joe Smith will provide some support but asking him to carry the interior load on offense would be fool-hearted. We expect the Bulls to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, but fall to the Pistons in a tightly contested series.
Salary Cap Info:
Bargain Contract: Luol Deng
Inflated Contract: Ben Wallace
Salary Cap Liquidity: Great
Salary Cap Notes: The Bulls have players at every position that other teams want.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Cedric Simmons, Hassan Adams, Devin Brown
Losses: David Wesley
Unsigned: Anderson Varejao (RFA), Sasha Pavlovic (RFA)
Projection: We have the Cavaliers ranked this high based off of last season's finish, but we expect them to trend downward. The Cavs are a difficult team to gauge because of the dynamics of their roster. Let's be honest - they had no business advancing to the NBA Finals last season and were promptly swept by the Spurs. Also inexplicable, Lebron's disappearance in the Finals after what looked like his coming out party against the Pistons, torching Detroit for 48 in Game 5 of that series. Finally, why did management allow Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovich to dangle on the free agent market all summer without making any productive moves of their own? Can a line-up of Eric Snow, Larry Hughes, Lebron
James, Drew Gooden and Zydrunas Ilgauskas contend again for a title? Not likely. If the Cavaliers are in contention when the trade deadline approaches expect a deal to be made. Mike Bibby seems like the logical target because of Cleveland's needs and Sacramento's desire to move in a different direction. Cleveland will make the playoffs again this season, but their run will be much shorter this season.
Salary Cap Info:
Bargain Contract: LeBron James
Inflated Contract: Larry Hughes
Salary Cap Liquidity: Poor
Salary Cap Notes: The Cavs have their hands tied financially. (Varejao and Pavlovic still unsigned)

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Jason Hart, Morris Almond, Kyrylo Fesenko
Losses: Derek Fisher, Rafael Araujo, Dee Brown
Unsigned: None
Projection: Utah posted 50 plus wins for the first time since the 2000-01 season and in the process, reached the Western Conference Finals. The combination of Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer conjured up images of the legendary Stockton to Malone high pick-and-roll that has become the signature trade mark for the Jazz organization. With a full season together, expect
Williams and Boozer to be even better this year. Mehmet Okur adds versatility to the Jazz offense with his ability to knock down shots from the perimeter. Without Okur, the Jazz struggle to consistently make jump-shots so his ability to allow space for the pick-and-roll is extremely important. These three return and should all reach or exceed last seasons production. Where the Jazz have an issue is on the wing. Andrei Kirilenko, a one time Jazz favorite, has fallen out of favor with Jerry Sloan, largely by his own accord. Stay tuned because this is a situation that could negatively impact Utah's entire season. Prior to the Kirilenko situation, Utah's most pressing need was at off-guard. Youngsters Morris Almond, Ronnie Brewer and CJ Miles will compete with veteran Gordan Giricek for the starting spot this season. Utah desperately needs both offensive and defensive production from this position if they hope to best last season's record of 51-31. We expect the situation with Kirilenko to fester and without a viable replacement for his production, we see the Jazz as
runners-up in the Northwest Division and losing in the first round of the playoffs.
Salary Cap Info:
Bargain Contract: Ronnie Brewer
Inflated Contract: Andrei Kirilenko
Salary Cap Liquidity: Good
Salary Cap Notes: The Jazz are in good shape, if they can move Kirilenko it would be even better.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Smush Parker, Anfernee Hardaway, Alexander Johnson, Joel Anthony
Losses: Jason Kapono, James Posey, Eddie Jones
Unsigned: Gary Payton (UFA)
Projection: The Heat should get off to a good start but start to slide to the back as the season progresses due to aging players and injuries. Sound familiar? It should. Miami lost Jason Kapono and James Posey in free agency and replaced them with Smush Parker and "Penny" Hardaway, so there is no reason to think this team should be any better than last years 44-38 record. The average age of this team is hovering around 27, and that number should get even higher when the roster is cut down for the start of the regular season. But realistically, Miami's season will be dependent on how many games Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal play together. The pair combined to miss 73 games last season. Obviously that is a number the Heat want to see decrease this season, but because of
Shaq's age and Wade's style of play, it is easy to project both players will miss a substantial portion of the season again this year. Transversely, when Wade and O'Neal are both healthy, the Heat are one of the best, if not the best team in the Eastern Conference. Beyond the two superstars, Dorell Wright and Udonis Haslem are the two remaining bright spots on this team. Haslem is a hard working power forward who will do most of the dirty work on the boards and in the paint. Dorell Wright is the lone young talent on this team, who performs well given the opportunity (8.7 ppg, 6.7 rpg and 2.0 apg in his 19 starts last season). Although, his points per game are nothing to write home about, he has never been one of the primary options for the Heat. With the departure of both James Posey and Jason Kapono, we expect Wright to be named the starting small forward heading into this season.
Salary Cap Info:
Bargain Contract: Alonzo Mourning
Inflated Contract: Antoine Walker
Salary Cap Liquidity: Poor
Salary Cap Notes: The Heat are old and injury prone, with no help in sight.

Additions: Luis Scola, Mike James, Steve Francis, Aaron Brooks, Carl Landry, Brad Newley
Losses: Juwan Howard, Jake Tsakalidis, Vassilis Spanoulis, Bob Sura, John Lucas
Unsigned: None
Projection: The Houston Rockets might be the deepest team in the league but are they too deep? Unless moves are made between now and the start of the regular season, the Rockets could start the year with six point guards on their roster. Unfortunately for the Rockets, the highest assist per game average of the six came from last year's starter Rafer Alston (5.4). Obviously, Rick Adelman and his staff would like to get better ball distribution from this position especially with the amount of offensive fire power at off guard and in the front court. Shooting guard Tracy McGrady is one of the most dynamic scorers in the league; Shane Battier is one of the most efficient players in the league and Yao is coming off a career best 25 point per game season. Add newcomer Luis Scola to the group and you have a Championship contender. The problem with the Rockets is not depth nor talent, it's not being able to keep their star players on the court. Injuries have plagued the Rockets for the past
two seasons - specifically, McGrady's chronic back issues and the stress that Yao's 7'6" frame endures on a nightly basis. However, the Rockets will make the playoffs this season despite these injury concerns but to be title contenders, the Rockets will need a full season from their two biggest stars. On a more positive note, expect the Rockets to be more aesthetically pleasing. Expect Adelman to move Yao from the low post to the high post, showcasing his smooth jumper while eliminating the wear and tear of banging in the paint. It will be interesting to watch the point guard situation evolve over the course of the season as two former Rockets (Steve Francis and Mike James) come home to a crowed back court.
Salary Cap Info:
Bargain Contract: Luis Scola
Inflated Contract: Mike James
Salary Cap Liquidity: Moderate
Salary Cap Notes: The Rockets have too much money designated to their six point guards.

Losses: Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair,Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West, Allan Ray
Unsigned: Michael Olowokandi (UFA)
Projection: Just another quiet off-season for the Boston Celtics. Well if that is what you were expecting as a Celtics fan you were wrong. This team has the potential to make one of the biggest single season win/loss turn-arounds in NBA history. Out are many of the young promising prospects that were being touted as the future of the organization, and in their place will be Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. The future is now for Boston and that future looks bright. As the roster stands right now, the Celtics should win the Atlantic Division and be a force in the post-season but they appear to be one player short of being a legitimate contender for the NBA Title. Rajon Rondo is a nice second year player who brings defense and quickness to the table but does he have the ability to consistently get the Celtics set up in their half-court offense? This team will not be able to run, or at least not sustain a transition game so the majority of Boston's points will come from offensive sets. A veteran point guard would help this team. If the right situation presents itself at the trade deadline, another big deal could be made. Another concern in "Bean Town" is defense. The superstar trio will be able to score but there is some concern about whether the Celtics will be able to defend. Although the starting unit might give up some points, Boston took steps toward solving this problem by signing James Posey late in the summer. Plus, Tony Allen's return should completely alleviate any defensive concerns in the back court. The Celtics appear to be ready to make a title run but we believe they need a floor general at the point to turn perception into reality. The window for success in Boston is small so whatever needs to be done should be done. Danny Ainge has set the wheels in motion: the youth is gone, and the veterans are here. Complete this team and the city of Boston can rejoice the return of the famed Boston Celtics.
Salary Cap Info:
Bargain Contract: Rajon Rondo

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Nick Young, Oleksiv Pecherov, Dominic McGuire
Losses: Jarvis Hayes, Michael Ruffin, Calvin Booth
Unsigned: None
Projection: Although the staff and those involved with Hoops IQ take basketball seriously, we do understand that life far exceeds the sports world. We would like to offer our thoughts and best wishes to Etan Thomas and his loved ones. As for the Wizards, Hibachi, Agent 0 or whatever else you want to call Gilbert Arenas, make no mistake he is the man in Washington. Along with Antwaine Jamison and Caron Butler, Arenas makes up the most prolific scoring trio in the NBA. Despite the union of Pierce with Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett in Boston, Arenas and his two running mates should hold that honor again this season. Although having the majority of your offense derived from three players is exciting, it can also be devastating if any of the three miss time and an absolute crisis if two of the three are out of action. That is exactly what happened towards the end of last season and the Wizards were a mere shadow of themselves in their playoff series against Cleveland. However, injuries will occur and what sets a great team apart from a good team or average team is consistent play from the supporting cast and reserve unit. DeShawn Stevenson is a nice player who can score in the NBA and back-up guard Antonio Daniels stepped in and was one of the lone bright spots for the Wizards down the stretch. Beyond these two players, Washington hasn't received much in the way of positive contributions. With his new deal in place, it is time for Andray Blatche to transform his potential into production. Jarvis Hayes is now in Detroit so Blatche should be the first forward off the bench in Washington's rotation. The youngster has tantalizing skills for a player of his size, but he also possesses deficiencies in his game that sparks the question: is he an interior player or a wing? The Wizards must hope that Blatche can improve his rebounding this season to help off-set the loss of Etan Thomas and the general ineffectiveness of Brendan Haywood. Another young big, Oleksiv Pecherov appears to still be quite raw and at least a year away from contributing consistent minutes. Washington is not without questions, but with the explosive trio of Arenas, Jamison and Butler, they will be one of the best teams in the East. The Wizards will make the
post-season again this year but struggle to advance again, because of their poor defense and inept
interior game.

Projection: If you are looking for a team that goes out and plays hard every night, has good chemistry and character with little flash, then look no farther than the Toronto Raptors. If your tastes are more glamorous then you probably don't know very much about Toronto besides their lone All-Star, Chris Bosh. Bosh is an absolute monster in the low-post but also possesses the athleticism to flourish in transition and the shooting touch to score from 10-20 feet facing the basket. Bosh has the skills and talent to carry a franchise. It was absolutely imperative that the Toronto Raptors organization keep Bosh in Toronto as a Raptor and they did. Bosh's contract extension was a huge step for a team that had continually lost superstars to bigger media markets because of the endorsement dollars. In addition to Bosh, the Raptors have built a nice nucleus consisting of guards: TJ Ford, Jose Calderon, Anthony Parker; forwards: Jorge Garbajosa, Jason Kapono and last years number one pick Andrea Bargnani. Consistency instead of flash led Toronto to last season's Atlantic Division Title. However, this year they will need to be better if they want to defend their division crown. Toronto finished with an 11 and 5 record against their Atlantic Division foes in 2006. That should drop close to .500 this season along with their overall record. The Raptors are a talented athletic wing player away from being a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately for the Raptors, we expect them to be edged out of the post-season by the slimmest of margins when this season comes to a close. However, Toronto is a team headed in the right
direction and if next summer is productive the Raptors should be back in the playoffs in 2008.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Steven Hunter, Chucky Atkins, Bobby Jones
Losses: Steve Blake, DerMarr Johnson, Jamal Sampson, Reggie Evans
Unsigned: None
Projection: Ah, my favorite over-hyped team. Carmelo Anthony's arrival in Denver spurred the media to anoint the Nuggets as an annual contender in the Western Conference. But why? This is a team that consistently plays below expectations, is injury prone and has a front office capable and unfortunately willing to sign just about any big body to a max contract. The Denver Nuggets franchise has been constructed to sell season tickets and win regular season games. Now it is tough to argue with bringing in revenue, but ultimately sustained success is derived by winning championships and not divisional titles. The Nuggets are one of, if not the worst defensive teams in the league and that is saying something when you have the reigning defensive player of the year on your roster. Ultimately, the Nuggets will need to outscore their opponents to win. When they get out in transition and hit their shots, they will be tough to beat. When their pace slows, they will struggle to win. This team should get a heavy dosage of national exposure and when they are at home, healthy and running they will challenge if not surpass the Suns and Warriors as the most entertaining team in the NBA. The much anticipated duo of Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson will be a handful for teams to contain, especially for teams that believe they can get out and run with the Nuggets. Although, the Nuggets were built with offense in mind the most important player to this team is Marcus Camby. Nene and Kenyon Martin's health issues are always in question so Camby is looked to as the last line of defense and sometimes the only line of defense for this Nuggets team. This summer's acquisition of Steven Hunter should take some of the defensive pressure off of Camby, and prove to be a much bigger signing than most would anticipate. The Nuggets should run their way through a weak Northwest Division, but falter again in the post-season.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Jamaal Magloire, Sean Williams, Malik Allen, Jumaine Jones, Darrell Armstrong
Losses: Mikki Moore, Eddie House, Hassan Adams
Unsigned: Clifford Robinson (UFA)
Projection: Although the Jamaal Magloire signing did not grab national headlines, it could turn out to be one of the biggest and best transactions of the summer. New Jersey was desperate for interior help: a presence in the middle that could score but more importantly rebound and defend. That is what they are hoping Magloire will provide. If he does, the Nets should battle the now high-profile Celtics for the Atlantic Division Title. If Magloire is unable to fill New Jersey's need in the middle, look for the Nets to turn to second year man Josh Boone or this year's first round pick Sean Williams for help. Nenad Krstic's return will also be key for New Jersey. If Krstic can come back at or close to 100 percent then his offensive skills should compliment the more defensive minded: Magloire, Boone and Williams. Assuming the interior questions get answered, the perimeter game of Jason Kidd, Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson should be even tougher to guard, especially in transition. The Nets have the talent to win not only the Atlantic but represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals. However, there are just too many unknowns at this point to consider that a realistic possibility. Will Richard Jefferson be able to avoid the dreaded DNP (did not play)? Will Vince Carter's production drop now that he has a new contract in place? Or how will Jason Kidd's body hold up with the extra games played this summer for Team USA? New Jersey will make the playoffs but because of the numerous uncertainties surrounding this team it is difficult to project them higher than a six or seven seed come post-season play.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Morris Peterson, David Wesley, Julian Wright, Melvin Ely
Losses: Desmond Mason, Marc Jackson, Devin Brown,Brandon Bass, Cedric Simmons, Linton Johnson
Unsigned: None
Projection: The New Orleans Hornets are one of the toughest teams in the NBA to project because last season was absolutely wrecked by injuries. However, they have so much young talent and dare I say it, potential. The Hornets are back in New Orleans full time this season so that should help bring some stability to an organization that many believed were ready to make the jump into the NBA elite. Chris Paul, Tyson Chandler and David West are the three youngsters that have fans in New Orleans excited about the 2007-08 season. Veterans Peja Stojakovic and Morris Peterson (aka. Mo Points, for his hand in Kobe torching the Raptors for 81) should add some offensive firepower from the perimeter but both are extremely suspect on the defensive end. Chandler continues to get better year after year and is an absolute monster in the paint. However, beyond the consistent improvement of Chandler, the Hornets have some uncertainties. Paul, West and Stojakovic all missed significant time last season making the development of Paul and West difficult to gauge. Both players have high ceilings, but it is Paul that could become one of the games best players. Some feel that he's there already. If the starting line-up can stay on the court and off the trainer's table the Hornets will win more games than they lose. If the injuries that plagued last season re-surface then the Hornets will slip to the bottom of the Southwest Division. Ok, so what do we expect? Chris Paul is the key and we expect him to bounce back with a brilliant season. Everything else should fall into place. West and Stojakovic will miss games, but their absence will be absorbed by newcomers Peterson and first round pick Julian Wright. Wright is a forward who has shown the ability to run the floor and more importantly, help on the glass. Byron Scott will get them to play hard every night, but in the Southwest Division that translates to a hard-fought forth place finish. New Orleans will return to the post-season but inexperience and the Western Conference powers will end their playoffs in the first round.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Rashard Lewis, Adonal Foyle, Marcin Gorat
Losses: Grant Hill, Darko Milicic, Travis Diener, Mario Kasun
Unsigned: None
Projection: The arrival of Rashard Lewis should create space in the post for Orlando's young superstar Dwight Howard. In his first two seasons in the league, Howard established himself as a defensive and rebounding force, but it is his offensive game that will propel the Magic deep in the post-season. Although the arrival of Lewis should do wonders with offensive spacing, the question is, will that move be enough to push Orlando into the driver's seat for a Southeast Division Title? No. The duo of Lewis and Howard will be tough to defend individually but there are too many holes in this roster to consider them a legitimate force in the Eastern Conference. The back court, simply put, is not good enough to get this team where it could or wants to be. Jameer Nelson is a nice player, capable of creating his own shot, but he has never averaged more than 4.9 assists per game in a season. What makes matters worse is his regression in nearly every offensive category last season besides rebounds and free throw percentage. The off-guard position is an even bigger question mark with JJ Reddick, Trevor Ariza and Keith Bogans all competing for court time. The problem with Nelson is his inability to facilitate an offense and getting the ball in the right hands at the right time. His failure to accumulate assists was over-looked or ignored in previous seasons because the Magic needed his "shoot-first" skills to win games. With the addition of Lewis, that's no longer the case. Orlando broke the bank to get Rashard out of Seattle so if Nelson struggles, expect the Magic to go after a veteran point guard. Orlando has more talent this season and should make the playoffs but unless further personnel changes are made this team will stay in the middle of the pack.

Projection: "Like sands through the hourglass so too are the days of our lives." Days of Our Lives has nothing on the Los Angeles Lakers. Since the love spat in 2004 between co-stars Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal the Lakers seem to be more interested in winning a day-time Emmy than a NBA Title. Jim Buss, Jeanie Buss, Mitch Kupchak and Phil Jackson have done nothing to solve any of the ills that currently exist with this franchise. The Lakers need to get back to what made them the class of the NBA and that starts at the top with strong management. The loss of long-time GM Jerry West continues to haunt this franchise because it has become painfully obvious that West did more to keep harmony between players than any of Phil Jackson's tactics. Prior to joining the Lakers, Jackson was considered the absolute best in managing personalities, but since 2004 the Lakers have been an on-going family feud. The Lakers are on the verge of losing the premier player in this league, and the reasons surrounding his departure is curious. Does Bryant have a legitimate complaint? Are his teammates and the Lakers organization as a whole not as committed to winning as he is? Or is Kobe acting like a prima donna? Only a handful of people can answer that question accurately. However, the truth usually lies somewhere in the middle. The harsh reality is that this situation is to the point where it doesn't matter who is at fault. This team will not win with the existing roster, and wholesale changes can not be made without moving Kobe. If there is a deal that will bring in talented youth, a move should be made but it is absolutely imperative that the Lakers organization get more value for Kobe than they did for Shaq. Another transaction like the one that brought Lamar Odom, Brian Grant and Caron Butler in from Miami will send the Lakers into the doldrums. If this roster stays in tact, expect Los Angeles to make the playoffs as a seven or eight seed and get bounced in the first round by one of the Western Conference elites.

Re-signing Don Nelson was a must, but even he won't be able to salvage the season if things start to unravel.read more »
2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Brandan Wright, Marco Belinelli, Austin Croshere, Kosta Perovic, Stephane Lasme, Troy Hudson
Losses: Adonal Foyle, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Josh Powell
Unsigned: Zarko Cabarkapa (UFA)
Projection: The league's best off-season move was not the signing of a player, but rather the Warriors bringing back Don Nelson to guide this flammable team. How he has managed to get all of these guys moving in a positive direction is better than any zen performance by Phil Jackson. Not only that, he has this Warriors team believing in themselves, in each other and saying all of the right things. The talent is there and "Nelly Ball" is conducive to much of the rosters skill set, but getting them all on the same page is astonishing. Needless to say, we are impressed. Baron Davis is still the key; he is the leader so keeping him happy and healthy is top priority. The remainder of the roster consists of cast-offs from other teams: guys that were either seen as headaches, or thought of as simply not good enough. Nelson has used that as a motivating tool and the
players have bought in, but for how long? Things that are flammable, remain flammable so beware. This team will not have the luxury of sneaking up on teams like they did last season so it will be important for Golden State to be more consistent if they want to build upon last season's success. The Warriors have a tendency to take quick shots and in some cases bad shots, many of which lead directly to transition baskets for their opponents. Therefore, offensive rebounding is a key. Although the loss of Jason Richardson will hurt, the addition of an athletic power forward who loves to attack the offensive glass was key. Golden State got exactly that when they traded for the draft rights of rookie Brandan Wright. Wright will also help take some of the defensive rebounding burden from center Andris Beidrins, and allow Nelson the flexibility to go small without losing an interior presence. This should be an up and down season for the Warriors because with this group, stability and consistency is not a strength. We expect them to battle the Lakers for the last spot in this years post-season but falling just short, finishing the year as the best team not in the post-season.

Losses: Channing Frye, Steve Francis
Unsigned: Kelvin Cato (UFA)
Projection: Have you ever tossed a coin into a dark hollow well? You can't really see how deep it is so you stand there waiting, listening, wondering when the coin will hit the bottom? Well we're not sure the Knicks coin has hit anything yet. After acquiring Zach Randolph in a deal that allowed them to dump Steve Francis, and a promising summer league in Las Vegas, what do the Knicks do? They get caught up in a very public sexual harassment trail. If that's not bad enough, they're found guilty. (Sigh) For every step forward in New York there seems to always be multiple steps backward soon to follow. The Knicks do have a young and exciting core group of players. The problem is they're hidden behind aging, over-priced players on the depth chart. If you don't follow the Knicks, the three players to watch this season are: Zach Randolph, Stephon Marbury and Eddy Curry. If those three are playing nice and getting along, the team should be winning (35-45 win season). If there is dissension from any or all three, the season should be right on track (30-40 wins). The Knicks current status is rare and unparallel in the NBA. Most teams are either on the rise or on the decline, and usually the trend is quite obvious, but the Knicks have elements of both. Assuming Bosh plays the majority of the season in Toronto and New Jersey keeps their roster together, the Knicks should finish fourth in the Atlantic Division for the third time in four years. New York simply has too many volatile situations and personalities to expect anything more than a 38 win season.

Projection: We projected Memphis to finish the season with a 38-44 record, but it could just as easily be 44-38. If this team gets off to a slow start will the addition of Juan Carlos Navarro be enough incentive for Pau Gasol to stay with the Grizzlies? Will Rudy Gay make the necessary steps in his second season to become a more consistent player? Will a combination of Stromile Swift, Hakim Warrick and Darko Milicic be able to produce along side Gasol? Plus, who will get the bulk of the minutes at point guard: Navarro, Mike Conley, Kyle Lowry, or Damon Stoudamire. Heading into this season Mike Miller is really the only known commodity. Miller should benefit from his time with the National Team this summer. Expect his production to remain consistent with last season's totals and his shooting percentage to improve slightly. There are a lot of question marks with this team but there's also a lot of talent, but can all five Southwest Division teams make the playoffs? New coach Marc Iavaroni should have this team well coached and firing on all cylinders offensively but defense could be an issue. A record of 38-44 is conservative but remember this was the worst team in the NBA last season.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Jason Richardson, Jared Dudley, Jermareo Davidson
Losses: Brevin Knight, Alan Anderson, Jake Voskuhl, Brandan Wright

Projection: The Bobcats went out and got their first marquee player, Jason Richardson. The Bobcats have quietly put together a solid team that has potential to be the surprise team in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte is still a year or two from making a legitimate run at a conference title but don't be surprised to see the Bobcats in the playoff hunt late in the season. In addition to newcomer Jason Richardson the Bobcats made re-signing their all everything small forward Gerald Wallace a top priority. Add, the extremely quick and vastly improved Raymond Felton and you have one of the most athletic 1, 2, 3 combinations in the NBA. If Emeka Okafor and Sean May can stay healthy this team will be a threat, however that is a huge if. Injuries are a concern for every team in the league but Charlotte is injury prone in the thin part of their roster. May has missed more games than he has played and Emeka routinely gets bit by the injury bug himself. Ryan Hollins, Premoz Brezic and Walter Herrmann will not be able to produce enough offensively if May and Okafor miss time. It was only a couple years ago that the Southeast Division was the Heat and "the teams the Heat crushed" but that's not the case any longer. The Heat are getting older and the Bobcats, Hawks, Magic and Wizards have all made improvements. The Bobcats are on the right path, expect their organization's diligent planning to start producing wins this season. If a productive, durable interior player is acquired next off-season it would not be unrealistic to think the Bobcats could win a divisional title in 2008-09.

Additions: Thaddeus Young, Jason Smith, Reggie Evans, Herbert Hill, Calvin Booth
Losses: Joe Smith, Steven Hunter, Bobby Jones

Projection: After finishing last season on a high note and accumulating three first round picks in what most considered the deepest draft in years, Phili fans had a lot to look forward to this summer. The Sixers could have been one of the biggest players on draft night but instead decided not to trade up, keeping their twelfth pick and drafting Thaddeus Young. Al Thornton was on the board and is clearly the more polished player at this point, but it is way to early to accurately grade this draft class. With the future more important than the present for the 76ers Young will have plenty of time to make his mark on the city of Philadelphia. Similarly, Jason Smith and Herbert Hill should both add front court depth this season and if Samuel Dalembert is slow to return from his foot injury Smith may see increased minutes to begin the season. But what doesn't make sense is why Reggie Evans was acquired at the expense of Stephen Hunter, especially with Dalembert's health in question? Phili will play hard each night but will struggle to re-capture the chemistry they had last year after the All-Star break. The loss of Joe Smith combined with Dalembert's injury will leave this team thin and inexperienced in the paint. If the 76ers get off to a slow start as we expect look for Andre Miller's name to be involved in rumors with Cleveland, Boston, Atlanta and Orlando. Philadelphia is rebuilding the right way it just takes time and patience.

Losses: Ruben Patterson, Brian Skinner, Ersan Ilyasova, Jared Reiner
Unsigned: Earl Boykins (UFA), Damir Markota (UFA), Lynn Greer (UFA)
Projection: The Milwaukee Bucks are an intriguing team. Michael Redd is a legitimate scorer, Maurice Williams had a break-out season in 2006-07 but injuries and poor play in the front court led to another dismal season. Center Andrew Bogut needs to do a better job asserting himself on the offensive end of the court, and the back court needs to do a better job getting him the ball. His comments this off-season did little to help the situation so this is definitely an area of concern for the Bucks. The good news is that forwards Charlie Villanueva and Bobby Simmons are finally healthy. Simmons missed the entire '06-07 season and Villanueva was in and out of the line-up to the point where he was never able to get himself into a rhythm. The addition of Yi Jianlian was curious but if he can live up to the pre-draft hype his versatility should make the Bucks a difficult team to stop offensively. Defensively, well that's a different story. If Milwaukee wants to make a run at the post-season they will need to play better defense and team basketball. Whether the disjointed, individualistic basketball the Bucks played last season was a product of Terry Stotts losing the team, injuries or simply selfish players, it needs to stop. This team is young, athletic and talented so there is no reason for Milwaukee to win fewer than 42 games this season. The burden of cohesion now falls on Larry Krystkowiak's shoulders. If the fragmented play continues don't be surprised to see some type of roster shake-up. Bogut may be the odd man out, if that's the case the Bucks should get a valuable piece to the puzzle back in return. Unfortunately we don't think this team will get it turned around this season, the problems that doomed this team last year will surface again this season so expect the Bucks back in the lottery next June.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Mikki Moore, Spencer Hawes, Mustafa Shakur, Orien Greene
Losses: Corliss Williamson, Ronnie Price
Unsigned: Vitaly Potapenko (UFA)
Projection: After a short head coaching stint at New Mexico State, Reggie Theus will be asked to turn around a Sacramento Kings team that has progressively gotten worse each of the past five seasons. Theus should bring an exciting brand of basketball to the Kings, both offensively and defensively. Sacramento struggled at both ends of the court last season, but their team defense was down right terrible. However, the biggest problem in Sacramento is the decision making in the front office. The Maloof's and Geoff Petrie are not on the same page and their player personnel decisions indicate that this team has lost it's identity. In order to turn things around in Sacramento the front office needs to re-examine what they are trying to accomplish, re-define the style of play they want the Kings to run and start acquiring talent that fits the system. Mike Bibby, Brad Miller and Shareef Abdur-Rahim all struggled last season on the court and Ron Artest struggled yet again off the court. Of the four, Miller's production took the biggest hit in Musselman's system. Removed from his comfort zone in the high post Miller looked lost, posting his worst statistical year while in a Kings uniform. However, Miller should be able to bounce back this season, but the feud. and poor performance of Bibby and Artest could prove to be a lingering problem. If the Kings get off to a poor start Bibby, Artest or both could be on their way out of town. The lone bright spot for the Kings last season was the emergence of Kevin Martin. It will be interesting to see how he performs this year now that teams have a full year of video to watch and prepare for his offensive game. The Kings will miss the playoffs again this season and should battle the Clippers for the Pacific Division cellar. If Theus is the guy, then those in control of personnel in Sacramento should begin constructing a roster that can play up-tempo, transition basketball. Although Spencer Hawes can play, he doesn't fit in a transition offense. Under Theus the Kings are 0 for 1 in the draft process, but they will have another high lottery pick next season to redeem themselves.

Additions: Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, Wally Szczerbiak, Kurt Thomas, Delonte West
Losses: Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, Andre Brown, Mike Wilks
Unsigned: Danny Fortson (UFA), Randy Livingston (UFA)
Projection: Hoops IQ might the only media publication that felt this was not a great or even positive off-season for the Sonics. The addition of Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West will not offset the loss of All-Stars Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis. Plain and simple. If you want to tell us how good Kevin Durant is we will listen, then agree with you and conclude our statement with the comment: "They were going to draft his rights regardless of the situation with Lewis and Allen." Ah, all of a sudden the moves don't look as good do they? Rashard's departure is understandable because of how much money the Magic decided to throw his way, but dumping Allen for Szczerbiak, West and the fifth pick was tough to understand. Especially when they draft Green a player that plays the same position as Durant who they drafted only minutes before. The Sonics have three centers that will split time, three point guards who will split time, three power forwards who will split time, a couple of small forwards and Kevin Durant. Nothing stands out on this team other than duplication and mediocre talent. Chris Wilcox and Nick Collison were arguable the two best returning players from last year's team but they play the same position so inevitably one will be held back by the other. The Sonics had their shot to speed up the rebuilding process by trading Ray Allen, they swung and missed. Seattle has little to offer in trade and unfortunately they did it to themselves by making bad decisions, especially on draft night. Although, we don't think Jeff Green is going to be worthy of the fifth pick, Hoops IQ is ecstatic that the Sonics fought off the urge to draft another "project" at center. Seattle should battle both Minnesota and Portland for last place in the atrocious Northwest Division while securing a top ten pick in next season's NBA Draft.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Al Thornton, Brevin Knight, Ruben Patterson, Dan Dickau
Losses: Jason Hart, Daniel Ewing, James Singleton, Yarolav Korolev

Projection: The Clippers season took a turn for the worse before it even began when news out of Los Angeles surfaced that Elton Brand had ruptured his Achilles. After suffering through a disappointing and injury plagued 2006-07 season the Clippers were hoping to re-gain the form that they showed in 2005-06, when they advanced to the Western Conference Semi-finals. Brand could possibly return around the All-Star break but will the Clippers still have a legitimate shot at making the post-season when he's ready to return? The Clippers know what they have in Sam Cassell, Brevin Knight, Cuttino Mobley and Ruben Patterson, so the answer to that question will depend largely on Corey Maggette, Al Thornton, Tim Thomas and Chris Kaman. Maggette is in a contract year so he should be completely focused on basketball, expect good numbers when he's healthy. Al Thornton may prove to be the steal of the draft at pick 14 because of his offensive versatility. With Brand sidelined for a large portion of this season the Clippers have discussed the possibility of playing Thornton at power forward in addition to time on the wing. If Thornton gets off to a fast start and the Clippers struggle, it would make moving the disgruntled Maggette at or before the trade deadline a realistic possibility. Finally, Chris Kaman will need to step up and be the man for the Clippers in the low-post. He has the skills to do it plus coming to camp in shape should help most forget about his disappointing 2006-07 season. The Clippers will struggle without Brand early in the season and they won't get him back in time to make a realistic run at the post-season. The Clips have difficult decisions heading into next season, both Maggette and Brand can opt out of their existing contracts next summer. Stay tuned.

Projection: The Blazers have to feel like they were punched in the gut when they received word that their number one pick would needed to undergo knee surgery. Immediate thoughts of Sam Bowie creep into the minds of those with knowledge of the past. Let's hope that Greg Oden will bounce back from this to become the player that nearly all believe he is capable of becoming. To make matters worse the Blazers moved often troubled Zach Randolph to New York in order to make room for Oden in the front court. With Oden sidelined and Randolph in a Knicks jersey the Blazers will rely heavily on last years rookies Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge to carry the load offensively. Roy took home rookie of the year honors last season and Aldridge came on strong after the All-Star break. Add, Jarrett Jack and Joel Przybilla to the starting line-up and you have a pretty good defensive unit, but the wildcard is at small forward. Both Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster have incredible skill-sets but neither have been able to transform potential into production. Outlaw is a "stat-filler" capable of posting solid numbers across the board and Webster is an excellent perimeter shooter and scorer. Both are young, but with the loss of Randolph the Blazers need one if not both to make the jump this season. This is an organization that should give life and hope to fans of teams that are going in the wrong direction. The Trailblazers or "jailblazers" were a running punch line for years, but in less than two seasons they have completely re-vamped their roster bring in good character guys who can also really play. Portland should once again suffer through some growing pains but next year this should be a team that challenges for a post-season spot.

2007-2008 Season Outlook:
Additions: Al Horford, Acie Law IV
Losses: Royal Ivey, Esteban Batista
Unsigned: Stanislav Medvedenko (UFA)
Projection: Have the Hawks finally turned the corner? Is this the year that the young talent puts it all together and becomes a team? Both are good questions and we have answered yes in the past so this year we are taking a wait and see approach. There is talent on this team, a lot of talent on this team but they lack a true leader. Joe Johnson is one of the most versatile players in the NBA both offensively and defensively. Josh Smith is a freakish athlete who seems to get off to a slow start each season but begins to figure it out as the year progresses. Marvin Williams was slowed by injury and a glut of players at his position but he too showed flashes after last year's All-Star break. Al Horford's great summer should also be cause for joy in Atlanta but this feels so similar that I am almost certain it's deja vu. Ultimately it comes down to maturity, leadership, hard work and consistency of which the Hawks have sorely missed for years. Tyronne Lue, Speedy Claxton and Acie Law will not provide those things for the Hawks so the answers to the first two questions remains up in the air. Please, ownership by committee get it figured out, this team is close, this team has attractive pieces, this team is prime for a blockbuster type deal. Whether that is bringing Kobe to Atlanta or Jason Kidd make it happen. This team is too good to waste away simply because they don't have a suitable floor general. Drafting Acie Law wasn't the right decision because there was a better option on the board at pick eleven. If management, Billy Knight, or whoever is actually making the personnel decisions in Atlanta thought that hometown star Javaris Crittenton was a reach at eleven then they should have traded down. If not then they should have taken him with their pick because it just makes sense, athletic point guard on an athletic team, plus he's from the Atlanta area. Sold. Atlanta should make a move, they should also be good but neither may happen the only for sure thing in Atlanta is that Joe Johnson and Josh Smith will be exciting.

Losses: Kevin Garnett, Mike James, Justin Reed, Trenton Hassell, Troy Hudson, Bracey Wright
Unsigned: None
Projection: As you might have noticed the Timberwolves were quite active this off-season tinkering a tad with their roster. Kevin Garnett is gone and half of Boston was relocated to Minnesota in this summer's blockbuster trade. Kevin Garnett was the face of the franchise in Minnesota for years, his desire to win was only matched by his passion for the game. KG is a true professional who drew criticism from some for not being selfish enough, for not being a "go-to" guy or in other words received heat for being a team player. Minnesota will miss Garnett but this was the right time and the Wolves did well getting the players they did in return, most notably Al Jefferson. Jefferson burst onto the scene last season when Paul Pierce went down to injury. The young Celtics leaned heavily on Jefferson's low-post offense for the majority of the season and he delivered. Although the Celtics struggled to win games Jefferson was the biggest bright spot in Boston heading into this off-season. Obviously things have changed but Jefferson is still a rising star and the Wolves will benefit now and in the future by having him in Minnesota. The Timberwolves have done a good job assembling young talent without duplicating multiple positions. The wing positions are congested but there are clear cut starters at center, power forward and point guard. Last year's rookie sensation Randy Foye was named the starter early in the off-season so this is officially his team. This years lottery pick Corey Brewer was a steal, when all is said and done he may be the best all around player in this draft class. Gerald Green and Rashad McCants are also young athletic players with high ceilings it's all a matter of if and when they put it all together. Ricky Davis, Juwan Howard and Mark Blount will add veteran leadership to this young team, but don't be surprised to see one or all of them dealt by season's end. Minnesota will struggle this season but the future is bright. Keep an eye on Al Jefferson, Corey Brewer and Randy Foye because they have the potential to become a dynamic trio.

Unsigned: Keith McLeod (UFA)
Projection: The Pacers are coming off of their worst season since 1988-89 and there is very little to be excited about heading into this year. Essentially, the roster that played their way out of the playoffs and to a 6-23 record to finish the season will be back with only a few exceptions. Travis Diener to the rescue? Probably not. The Pacers had a terrible off-season, not because of Travis Diener but because that was the only acquisition that Indiana could pull off this summer. Granted, I am a Travis Diener fan but let's call it what it is, he is an insurance policy for Jamal Tinsley. This team needs more than reserve help, it needs a complete make-over. Jamal Tinsly although talented can not stay healthy and his off-court problems still hang a dark cloud over
his on-court performance. Jermaine O'Neal's name popped up in nearly every trade rumor this summer so his days appear to be numbered in Indiana. Danny Granger and Ike Diogu are two young players with upside but beyond them the cupboard is pretty bare. Indiana's front office found themselves in a tough situation last season after Stephen Jackson once again made his way onto the police blotter. After numerous run-ins with the law the Pacers finally parted ways with the troubled Jackson, packaging him with Al Harrington in a move that brought back Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Troy Murphy. This team has no continuity, from the outside looking in it appears there are a bunch of round pegs all trying to fit into square openings. Status quo was not the right response by management and this team will suffer because of it. Although, the Pacers will not finish the regular season with the worst record they are at the bottom of our pre-season rankings because of their 6-23 finish to last season and their front office's inability to improve this team.
